Rock Musician. A drummer and percussionist, he was best known for his work as a member of The Allman Brothers Band. Raised in Connersville, Indiana, along with his brother Dan, he was exposed to a wide variety of music genres including country and rhythm and blues which shaped his later instrumental career. His first break in entertainment was in 1978, when he joined Dan (who played the guitar) as a member of Dickey Betts & Great Southern's ensemble. In 1980, Toler succeeded Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson as drummer for The Allman Brothers Band and contributed instrumentally to their "Brothers of the Road" album (1981), which yielded the top-40 hit "Straight from the Heart". Following the group's disbanding in 1982, he remained with Gregg Allman as a member of his band and recorded on his "I'm No Angel" album (1986). From 1992 to 1994, Toler was a part of another noted Southern Rock group The Marshall Tucker Band and later formed his own ensemble The Toler Brothers with Dan. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 as member of The Allman Brothers Band. He died from complications following a liver transplant.
