Mr. Besser was born September 30, 1927 in Cleveland, OH to Nicholas and Helen Oros Besser, Sr.
The 1945 alumnus of Rhodes High School in Cleveland earned bachelor's degrees in history in 1954 and in education in 1955 from Bowling Green State University; and a master's degree in arts and history in 1963 from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
An Army veteran, he served from 1946-47.
Mr. Besser retired in 1991 after 28 years from Edinboro (PA) University, where he was a professor from 1963-91. Previously he taught at Woodville (OH) High School and Cloverleaf High School, Medina, OH.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sharon, PA.
Surviving are his wife Eleanor (Rearick), whom he married June 23, 1956; four daughters, Laura (David) Williams, Linda (Kenneth) Moore, Lisa (Glenn) Yothers, and LeeAnne (George) Krause; three sons, Nicholas III (Suzanne), Douglas (Mary Ann), and Charles (Melanie); and 16 grandchildren, Molly, Katy, Ben, Ali, Tori, Chris, Nick, Michael, Sarah, Matthew, Hannah, Elizabeth, Michelle, Zeke, Everett, and Grayson.
Mr. Besser was an historian, with particular interest in the history of the Civil War and the Balkans. Later in his life he began writing, creating books on the history of his ancestral family and of his wife and decendents' families. He loved classical music, especially Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan.
