Crispen Shelton was named for his great grandfather Crispin Shelton, born in Virginia 90 years earlier. As is often the case with this family, it gets complicated: this Crispen Shelton's parents, Lettice (Shelton) Shelton and Stephen D. Shelton were first cousins, both being grandchildren of the elder Crispin through different sons, Gabriel and Armistead. To make matters even more baroque, Stephen D. Shelton's parents were themselves first cousins: Armistead Shelton & Susannah (Shelton) Shelton and were both grandchildren of the elder Crispin's parents, Ralph and Mary Shelton .

Crispen Shelton was married four times. His first wife was Susan Creeseman, by whom he had seven children: Mary M., Jacob D., Henry F., John W., Martha A. (Sherrill), Susan S., and Nancy L. Shelton.

His second wife, the former Mrs. Pamelia Cocheran, died in October 1862 having borne him one child, Henry P.

His third wife was Jane Wilson, who had no children by Crispen.

He was married for the last time in September 1869 to Rebecca P. Cowart. The two offspring of this union were Lovice P. and Jesse M. Shelton.
