From the Register of the Empire State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution published in 1899, page 368:
Ensign, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, & Adjutant in Col. Jedidiah Huntington's Regiment Connecticut Militia; participated in battles of Germantown, Monmouth and Stony Point, and wintered at Valley Forge. Two brothers were killed and one desperately wounded at the massacre of Fort Griswold. Their father, the Rev. Park Avery, was pastor of a church in Groton, and every male member of his congregation was either killed or wounded in that battle.
He married Feb 25, 1777 Lucy Swan, daughter of Joseph Swan and Elizabeth (Smith) Swan. After her death on June 28, 1794, he married Elizabeth Billings, daughter of Stephen Billings and Mary (Avery) Billings. They were married Feb 12, 1795.
