George remained unmarried and was unable to live a fully independent life because he was profoundly deaf from childhood. Nevertheless, he was able to learn farming and worked for his family and later for neighbors. His older sister Sarah provided a home for him after the deaths of their parents, until her death in 1936. George thereafter lived with one or another of his siblings' families.
