Born in New York, Clifton Kitridge Read Jr. (known to his family as Kitridge) moved with his family little by little westward until they settled for a time in Pike County, Illinois. There his father decided that the family would move to California to try their luck at getting rich. They set out overland in 1852, traveling by covered wagon with a wagon train. Kitridge, sixteen years old, was chosen to act as a scout for the wagon train part of the time. Somewhere along the way his father changed his mind about California, and they took the northern trail to Oregon instead. Arriving in the Willamette Valley, they took up a donation land claim in Marion County near Turner, where they lived ever after.

Kitridge married Elizabeth Nancy Porter, the daughter of another pioneer family that had settled in the same area four years before the Reads arrived. They were married on October 20, 1864 in Salem, Marion, Oregon. He and Elizabeth had nine children, all of whom lived to adulthood. Kitridge inherited the house that he and his father and their other relatives built, together with the pasture and farm. The family were staunch Christians, helping found a church in the area.
