Mathias Wagner immigrated to America on the steamship Clotilde, which departed from Antwerp, Belgium and arrived in New York on 3 Jun 1852. Mathias married twice, first in 1852. His first wife Annie Peiffer (Anna Katharina Peiffer) died in 1860, apparently from post-partum complications related to the 22 Apr 1860 birth of their son Alexander (bap 26 Apr 1860). There were a total of four children from the first marriage, including Mary, who was born and died in 1854. Of the children from his first marriage, only one survived to adulthood, Martin.
