Excerpt from "Ayrshire, Iowa Centennial - Cherishing Yesterday, Challenging Tomorrow - 1882-1982"; pp. 130-131 - written by Florence (Anglum) Degnan and Maurine (Anglum) Sweeney:

William James Anglum was born in Neola, Iowa. His wife, Ann Dailey, was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, on December 27, 1875.

James and Ann were married in the Sacred Heart Church on Feb. 6, 1893. Ten children were born to them: Edward, died in infancy; William, died at age of two; Mary was seven when she burned to death in a tragic fire in 1904. This fire is the fire that destroyed the north half of the business district of Ayrshire. She and some little friends were on their way home from school, and as children will, were picking articles such as pretty buttons out of the ashes left from the fire the night before. Her clothing caught fire, apparently from a small spark that was in the debris. A man who was passing by threw his coat about her and distinguished the flame. She was taken to Dr. Duhigg's office and later Dr. O'Brien was called, but she was dead when he arrived in Ayrshire. At that time they were living in the house that was located where Steve Peterson's log house now is. Rachel married Harry Degnan, and died in 1972. Florence married Ralph Degnan, and lives southeast of Ayrshire. Harry (Posey) died in 1973. John M. passed away at the age of thirty-three in 1938. Matthew and Margaret (twins), Margaret died at birth and Matthew in 1930. Maurine (Toots) married Bert Sweeney. She lives in Ayrshire, and is Postmistress of the local Post Office.

The Anglums came from Neola, Iowa, in 1892. Later James and John operated a meat market in Ayrshire for several years. Later Jim, with his family, moved to Mallard where he ran a meat market. Mrs. Anglum died while they lived there, in 1911. Jim continued the meat market until he became ill in 1917, when they returned to Ayrshire. He passed away in 1921.

WILLIAM J. ANGLUM CALLED TO REWARD
-------------
Funeral at Ayrshire Yesterday. An Old Resident of This County
-------------
Saturday our citizens were painfully surprised to learn that William James Anglum had died at his home near Ayrshire. He Was, it seems, quite ill for some time. Hence his passing was not altogether a surprise to the members of his family or to his neighbors.

The funeral was held yesterday. Services were conducted at the Sacred Heart church at Ayrshire, the pastor, Father Lynch, celebrating a requiem high mass. The burial was in the parochial cemetery. The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased - Walter Gardner, William Hossick, Joseph Anglum, John Anglum, Joseph Daily and Michael Daily.

Mr. Anglum was born in Boone, IA., May 27, 1966. His age was fifty-five. He was married at Ayrshire February 7, 1892, to Miss Ann Daily. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Anglum. Six are living. They are Rachel, Florence, Marine, John, Harry and Mathew. There are three sisters -- Mrs. [Sarah] Russell of Whittemore, Mrs. Thomas [Winifred] Smith of Chokio, Minnesota, and Mrs. [Elizabeth] Bowen of Alberta, Canada. The only brother, John Anglum, is one of the well known citizens of Ayrshire. Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Anglum moved to Harrison county where they resided for some time, after which they returned to Palo Alto. They made their home at Ayrshire until 1904 when they became residents of Mallard. They moved back to Ayrshire in 1917. While at Mallard Mr. Anglum was engaged in the meat market business for several years. Mrs. Anglum died February 6, 1911. For some time before his death, Mr. Anglum and his family lived on a farm near Ayrshire. Among those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. Thomas Smith of Chokio, Minnesota, Mrs. Russell of Whittemore and Mr. and Mrs. Parks of Spencer.

Mr. Anglum was genial, frank, open minded and was a good mixer. He was ready to give and take and was anxious to make his surroundings agreeable to others. He was a clever business man and he enjoyed the good will of his many patrons. He was straightforward and upright and would not intentionally do any one an injury. He was a devoted, helpful member of his church and he practiced regularly and conscientiously his religious obligations. He took an active part in community affairs and he gave to worthy purposes according to his means. His death is a great loss to the members of his family, two or three being comparatively young and inexperienced. The sympathy of all who know them is extended to them in their bereavement.
