Gothard was born in St. Louis county, Missouri to Reinhold and Anna Christina Louise (Gallen) von PFENNIGHAUSEN on 14 February 1865.

In the 1880 U. S. Census, he is living at home with his father and little brother, Otto (my great-grandfather).

In 1885, he is living with his father in St. Louis, working as a machinist.

He married Emma J. HOOSS, daughter of Thomas and Mary Katherine (Cadenbach) HOOSS, on 9 June 1890 in Perry county, Missouri.

In the 1900 U. S. Census, we find Gothard with his wife and 3 sons in Clearfield, Clearfield county, Pennsylvania working as a machinist.

In the 1920 U. S. Census, we find Gothard with his wife and 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law in Wethersfield, Hartford county, Connecticut. He is working as the Superintendent of a factory. From family stories, it is believed this factory produced furniture.

In the 1930 U. S. Census, Gothard is listed as "E. Gothard PENNING" and living with "J. Emma" in Milford, New Haven county, Connecticut, working as a "manufacturer." It is not known why he changed his name, but all of his sons did as well. They are all listed in their Social Security records with a last name of PENNING.

In addition to the sons shown listed here, Gothard's youngest son was Thomas H. PENNING, born in June 1900 and believed to have died in 1959 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
