On 13 November 1854 Tunis his father Arie VanderAa (45 y, farmer), his mother Maggeltje (43), his siblings Klaas (20), Grel (18) and Thijs (9) arrived on the ship Mississippi from the Netherlands, province Zuid-Holland at the port of New York, Castle Garden. Tunis' brother Gerrit (2) died on board of the ship and was very probably buried at sea, and two brothers with both the given name Thijs died in the Netherlands in 1841 and 1842 when they were two years and a half year old. It's quite likely that the third Thijs, born in 1843, soon died in Cook County, Illinois or Lake County, Indiana.

On 11 January 1857 T(e)unis was born in Dolton, a village just south of Chicago and north of the Dutch truck farmers settlement South Holland, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.

His wife Hester Elizabeth died in December 1897 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 39 years.

In June 1900 Tunis Van Der Aa (43 y, born in January 1857 in Illinois, widower, farmer), his children Maggie (16, March 1884, Illinois), Walter (15, July 1885, llinois), Jennie (14, August 1886, Illinois), Harry (13, November 1887, Illinois), Garrett (11, April 1889, Illinois), Lena (10, June 1890, Illinois), Sebastian (9, October 1891, Illinois), Sophia (7, August 1893, Illinois) and Etta (5, April 1895, Illinois) lived at an own farm in Dolton, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.
Next to them Tunis' oldest brother Nicholas Van Der Aa (65, farmer) lived with his wife Alice (59) and their children Nickolas (21), Micheal (20), Henn (17) and Sarah (15) at an own farm too.
