Roscoe Cecil Altis was born December 16, 1913, north of Cabool in Texas County, Missouri, and departed this life March 30, 2005, at 9:02 a.m. in his home at the age of 91 years, three months, 14 days with his wife and daughter by his bedside. Roscoe was the second son of D. H. "Dan" and Alma (Ross) Altis. His mother passed away when he was very young. He was then raised by his stepmother, Mable (Gitt) Altis. Roscoe came to know Christ at an early age. As a youth he walked to Oak Grove Church to attend services. When he became older he joined Hamilton Creek Church. When his father founded and established Providence Free Will Baptist Church in 1934, he transferred his membership to it. He was the last charter member and church trustee. He served numerous times as superintendent. He attended regularly until the past few years, and saw that his family attended also. His membership remained there at the time of his passing. Roscoe attended a little one-room school. Though never finishing grade school, he could figure math with the best of them. Roscoe spent his youth working in his dad's store and on the farm. Farming was all he knew, having large dairy herds and in later years transferring over to beef cattle. Even in his 80's he was still in the hay fields and caring for beef cattle. Only in the last year had he slowed down, but not stopped. He worked hard all his life and was successful at it. On September 12, 1944, he was united in marriage to Opal Skyles. To this union one child was born, Virginia Lee. He and Opal celebrated 60 years together last year. In a previous marriage he had three children, Nolan Cecil, Juanita, and Dale Gene Altis. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother; two sons, Nolan and Dale; one grandson, Dale Elliott; and two brothers, Vern and Ralph. He is survived by his wife, Opal of the home; their daughter, Virginia Ladd and husband Al of Ozark, Missouri; his daughter, Juanita Henderson and husband Johnny of Surf Side Beach, South Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Ann Altis of Mtn. Grove, Missouri; six grandchildren, Scott Elliott and wife Marie of Cabool, J. C. Elliott of Springfield, Missouri, Tami Jo Brantley and husband Joe of Springfield, Mike Henderson and wife Cindy of Alpharetta, Georgia, Danny Altis and wife Brenda of Marshfield, Missouri and David Altis and wife Sherri of Mtn. Grove; twelve great grandchildren; Victor Biega, who was like a grandson to Roscoe; his half brother, Clifford Altis and wife Rutha of Kansas City; a half sister, Doris Altis of Kansas City; and other family members. Roscoe was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a friend to everyone who knew him, giving a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be missed by all who knew him. Services were held April 2, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Elliott-Gentry-Carder Chapel. Officiating was Pastor Don Ratterree. Music was by Barbara Tate and a solo by Michael Altis, "In the Garden." The pallbearers were Don "Pee Wee" Heathman, Brian Elliott, Steve Skyles, Jeff Clay, Merle Dixon, and Al Ladd. Honorary bearers were Rudy Grice and Richard Skyles. Burial was in Providence Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool. - Cabool Enterprise
