Houston Herald newspaper: LAVERNE ALTIS - William Laverne Altis, 87, son of Dan and Alma Ross Altis, was born Feb. 3, 1912, near Cabool. He died May 14, 1999, at the Kabul Nursing Home. He married Hazel Rust. they had two childen and worked in a country store owned by his father. Mr. Altis drove a milk and feed truck for several years. Later the Altis' moved to a farm near Simmons, where he was a dairy farmer for many years. he later riased beef cattle. About five years ago, he moved to Pineview Heights in Cabool. He was active most of his life in the Providence Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years in 1988; a son, Eddie in 1986; his parents and one brother. Surviving are one daughter, Ethel Cole of Houston; one brother, Roscoe Altis of Cabool; a half brother, Clifford Altis of Kansas City; a half sister, Doris Altis of Kansas City five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and a step great-great-grandson. Services were May 18, at the Providence Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Adkison and the Rev. Robert Adkison officiating. Burial was in the Providence Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home of Cabool.
