FROSTBURG — Grace E. Bittner, 96, of 16 Standish St., Frostburg, died Nov. 5, 2005, at her residence. Born Dec. 28, 1908, in Finzel, she was the daughter of the late Ira George Finzel and Barbara Anna Finzel. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Bittner, in 1967; and her brother, Edward C. “Ebbie” Finzel, in 2000. Mrs. Bittner was graduated from Beall High School and Cedar Crest College. She began her teaching career at Pennsylvania Avenue in Cumberland and transferred to Beall High School where she taught for 33 years. She was chairman of the English Department until her retirement in 1968. She helped to organize the Friends of the Library and to establish the first Frostburg Public Library. Mrs. Bittner was a charter member of Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a member of the Beall High Alumni Association, the local, state and National Retired Teachers Association, and a life-time member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Frostburg. She was honored by the City of Frostburg as Woman of the Year in 1990. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Monday. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at St. John's Episcopal Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father Richard Morley as celebrant. Interment will be in the Finzel Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Wayne Kasecamp, Arthur Beal, Donald Bell, Charles Hout, James Jeffries, and Jack Skidmore. Honorary pallbearers will be William Sanged, Berl Plummer, Eugene Smith, Nathan Jackson, Ronald Jeffrey, Robert Rephan, and Don Rice, members of the Academic Section of the Class of 1952, Wives and Husbands.
