FAIR HAVEN - Chester Edward "Chet" "Ted" Thayer, 77, of Fair Haven, Vt., formerly of Eastford, Conn., died peacefully on Friday, May 27, 2011, with his loving family at his bedside. He was born on August 31, 1933, in Orwell, Vt. Chester was a twin born to the late Chester Erza and Grace (Lapsher) Thayer. Chester married Anna Farkas on September 8, 1951, in Bridport, Vt. They had celebrated 59 wonderful years together. Throughout his life, Chet lived in Hubbardton, Castleton, Poultney and Fair Haven, Vt., and Eastford, Conn. He worked as a farmer, a mechanic, and loved his workshop. He was always tinkering with something. He loved NASCAR racing and going to Devil's Bowl in Vt. and Thompson & Stafford Motor Speedways in Conn.

In addition to his wife, Chester is survived by his children: five daughters, Bonita King (Steve) of N.C., Donna Spink (Peter), Anna Bryant (Terry) and Mary Freeland, all of Conn., Paula White (Herbert) of Mass.; three sons, Chester Thayer II of R.I., Frank Thayer (Beth) of Conn., and John Thayer (Lisa) of Vt.; a sister, Muriel "Mert" Leonard of Vt./Fla.; 23 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his brothers, Lester and Harold; his sisters, Rose Bryant and Betty Alger; his daughter-in-law, April Bourn Thayer; and grandson, Christopher Michael Thayer.

Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam, Conn. Calling hours Wednesday, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
