Grace E. Thayer, 96, of Rutland, died May 30, 2008, at Eden Park Nursing Home. She was born July 31, 1911, in Orwell, the daughter of James and Martha (Cook) Labshere.

She graduated from Orwell School. She married Chester Thayer in 1928. Mrs. Thayer worked at Flyles Corp. in Orwell, and later at Lindholm's Diner.

Survivors include a daughter, Muriel Leonard of Rutland; a son, Chester Thayer of Fair Haven; a sister, Jennie Ryan of Rutland; 28 grandchildren; 84 great-grandchildren and 85 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1968; two sons, Harold Thayer in 1962 and Lester Thayer in 1933; two daughters, Betty Alger in 1996 and Rosemary Bryant in 2001; one granddaughter in 2002; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Tossing Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas Mattison, associate pastor at Christ the King Church, will officiate.
Burial will take place in Mountain View Cemetery in Orwell.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Open Door Mission Inc., 31 Park St., Rutland, VT 05701.
