Charles Hawks and Jane Streeter were married in England June 15, 1847.
Jane Streeter Hawks had a sister, Mary, and three brothers, William, Stevens and Charles.
When Henry, the first son (known as Harry to most of us) was about 4 ½ years old, Charles Hawks left his family with Jane Hawks' parents and made a trip to America. He liked it very much but returned to England and established a store at Seven Oakes, England. Gertrude F. was born while they lived there.
In Jun, 1867 the family came to America, locating at Salem Marion County, Illinois. Four children were born to them while living here: Valeria C, Rowland V, Frederick P and Sarah Ann.
In the year of 1873, known as the grasshopper year, they moved with their family to Wichita, Kansas. In the fall of that year they bought a farm northeast of Rose Hill, Kansas. Five children were born here; William C., Emily J., Sidney S., C. Francis and Everett A.
