David was the son of Simon Hood and Louisa Bricker. His paternal grandparents were George Hood and Elizabeth Goist.

He married Lovina D. Rand on 6 August 1854 in Trumbull County, Ohio. She was born in 1829 in Ohio. In 1860 David and Lovina were living in Lima, Grant County, Wisconsin. David was a farmer.

On 2 February 1865 enlisted in the Army. He served as Private, in the Union Army, in the Wisconsin Infantry, 47th Regiment, Company G. David mustered out on 18 July 1865. His enlistment papers described him as 5 feet 9 1/2 inches tall, gray eyes, sandy hair and light complexion. He listed his occupation as a carpenter.

After the Civil War, the family was living in Easton, Ionia County, Michigan. In 1880 they were living in Handy, Livingston County, Michigan.

In 1910 Lovina was widowed and living in Caledonia, Shiawassee County. She had 6 children and 4 lived to adult hood.
