"The following was related to Mrs. George T. Ford (nee Crane) granddaughter of Mrs. Charles Patton on 21 Aug 1936.
A family by the name of Ward, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Ward and several small children, crossed the plains in the 1850's, and on arriving in Sonoma County made their camp not far from the Charles L. Patton place. Mrs. Ward was taken very ill with cholera and was cared for by Mrs. Patton. Mrs. Ward said "Oh I cannot die and leave my babies", she did die however, and was buried under a live oak tree, which is close to the present (1936) Steuben District school house, also not far from the Patton place. The Ward family moved to Petaluma."
