Roger Paul Birky, 70, of Lafayette, died at 8 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2011, at Regency Place.
He was born March 24, 1941, in Valparaiso, the son of Florence Danielson Birky of Lafayette and the late Warren Birky. He was a graduate of Kouts High School and attended Goshen College.
His marriage was on Dec. 22, 1962, in Goshen to Beverly Stalter, and she died Feb. 22, 1963.
Mr. Birky was in voluntary service with the Mennonite Church in Haiti from 1960 to 1962 and returned there in 2003, serving nearly two more years.
He was a private pilot with instrument and multiengine ratings and an instructor with Blue Sky Aviation in Elkhart, flying for nearly 13 years. He then opened P&R Carpet Co. in South Bend, retiring in July 1992 due to illness. He returned to Lafayette in 2004 and worked part time as a security officer at Fairfield Manufacturing.
He was a ventriloquist, and his vent figure was named Philmore. He performed at churches and nursing homes.
Surviving with his mother are one brother, Larry Birky (wife: Myrna) of West Lafayette, and one sister, LaVonne Bennett (husband: Bruce) of Benton, Wis.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Barnhart.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the memorial service Friday, June 3, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Home with Pastor James Chase officiating. Interment to follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park.
