Son of Abel Sowle and Mary "Polly" Hammond he was employed as a shipwright.

On August 10, 1851 he married Miranda B. Freeman.

He enlisted as a private in Company G, Massachusetts 3rd Infantry Regiment on 26 Sep 1862 and was mustered out on 26 Jun 1863 at Camp Hooker, Lakeville, MA.
