Flagman Dies After Being Hit By Auto

A highway flagman was killed Monday afternoon when struck by a car while he was working on Interstate 57 and 70 about a quarter mile south of Effingham, Illinois.

Albert Milton Cohea, 54, of Mattoon, Illinois formerly of Effingham, Illinois was dead on arrival at St. Anthony Hospital, Effingham, Illinois.

According to Effingham County Coroner R.R. Lystilla, John K Muday, 24, of alsip was driving in the passing lane northbound when he struck the flagman. Dr. Lystilla said Mr. Cohea was flagging traffic for a crew which was doing shoulder work on the passing side of the highway. The accident occurred about 2:20 PM. An inquest is pending.

Mr. Cohea was born in Effingham County, Illinois.

He leaves his wife, Emma Tarrant Cohea, son, Lonnie, at home, brothers, Everett, Mason, Illinois; Jess, Decatur, Illinois; Russell, Effingham, Illinois; sisters, Mrs. Tressa Hockman, Decatur, Illinois; Mrs. Minnie Lilley, Effingham, Illinois; Mrs. Sadie Cohea and Mrs. Clara Bradford, both of Effingham, Illinois; half-brother Orville, Effingham, Illinois; half-sister, Lola Cohea, Effingham, Illinois.

A daughter, Savilla preceded him in death.
