South County Correspondent Pays Tribute

(Velma Dayton, our Hesperia-Bryson correspondent, paid final tribute to her aunt in the following article, written as no one else can write of old times in the Southern Monterey County.)

Clyde and Velma Dayton attended the funeral of Aunt Ruby Barron Friday in Santa Maria.

Charles Adam, Velma Dayton's cousins from San Ardo accompanied the Daytons to the funeral.

The Adam clan is getting smaller. Aunt Ruby was born on the place where we are living now. In 1890, she attended the Hesperia school. When she was about fifteen, she moved with her parents, my grandparents, John and Mahalia Adam to the Imperial Valley, then just a tent town.

Aunt Ruby worked very hard all her life. She married young, and had two boys. Her husband died, then one son was a fisherman, and he was lost at sea.

She married again. The second husband preceded her in death, also her other son, her brother, my father also had passed away, her brother left, John Adam is in a rest home. She just had nieces, a nephew, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren left.

She had two strokes. The first one, she seemed to get better, but the second she did not get over. She was a Christian, and she told me not long before she passed away, that she was ready to go, did not want to linger. It is really sad when old folks pass on. Most of the ones they know are passed on, or are too far away to attend the funeral. It is sad to be old. No wonder Ponce DeLeon was looking for the Fountain of Youth. Everybody likes to look young. Not many remember Aunt Ruby, but there will be a few who remember her.
