Walter R. Balthaser, 82, former Centerport borough secretary, died Friday night in his Centerport residence. Born in Centerport, a son of the late Jerome A. and Emma (Rentschler) Balthaser, he was secretary of the borough from 1943 to 1968. He was financial secretary of POS of A Lodge 446, and a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Tilden Township and the Centerport Sunday School.
Mr. Balthaser also was affiliated with Henry J. Stager Commandery No. 35, Centerport; Behler-Hein Post 637, American Legion, Hamburg; Greater Reading Post 179, Veterans of Foreign Wars and its home association and Union of Leesport and Central Berks of Centerport fire companies.
While in the Army he was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.
Surviving are his widow, Laura M. (Mengel) Balthaser; a son, Merritt M., Mohrsville R.D. 1; a daughter, Dorothy M. Balthaser, at home, and a granddaughter.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the M. Domer Leibensperger Funeral Home, Centerport, the Rev. Martin L. Zirkle officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Tilden Township.
