He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church of Rogersville, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, member of Overton Lodge #5 F&AM, and a member of Jericho Shrine Temple.
Elmer was first employed by TVA in the Engineering Department and helped build the TVA dam.
At the age of 29 years he went to work for State Farm Insurance Company and was employed by them for over 48 years. It has been a common saying in Hawkins County for many years that "When you thought of insurance in Hawkins County you thought of Elmer Couch - Mr. Insurance."
He was also a member of the Horse Cavalry for two years at Fort Oglethorp, GA.
He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Couch; grandson, Charles McKinney; parents, Joe and Eliza Couch; two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Couch of the home; daughter, Ann McKinney and husband, Harold of Rogersville; grandson, Stephen McKinney and wife, Amy of Rogersville; granddaughter, Susan Barrett and husband, Ballou of Rogersville; great grandson, Chase McKinney; two step-daughters, Teresa Piqué' of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Cheryl Johnson and husband, Larry of Nashville; sister, Opra Cope of Rogersville; several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home. Overton Lodge #5 F&AM conducted Masonic services at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Funeral services followed with Rev. Jason Nida officiating. Graveside services were held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at Highland Cemetery. Members of Overton Lodge #5 F&AM were pallbearers.
Colboch-Price Funeral Home in Rogersville is in charge of the arrangements.
