HIGGINBOTHAM, John Robert, "Higg", born August 2, 1934 in Carbo, Sonora, to Lorenzo Higginbotham and Berta Campillo, passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side on May 6, 2011.

He is survived by four children, twins, Elizabeth and Margaret, and John and Christine; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as his companion of many years, Karyl Tomizuka and her family, who all adored him.

John came from Mexico to Tucson in 1935. As a Sergeant in the US Marines from 1953 - 1961 with time served in Japan, he received a National Defense Service Medal and Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.

After welding for Anamax mine, his focus became ornamental ironwork, a skill he learned from his father. John became known for his artistic blacksmith work all around Tucson. He enjoyed his travels with Karyl to Mexico, London, Holland, Spain, Italy, Morocco and Brazil, but most colorful were his stories of Tucson and its cast of characters in the days when he was growing up. He loved Lake Patagonia, where he had many adventures with his beloved boat, unruly trucks, pet VW Bug and his family. Unfaltering a gentleman, John's winning ways, unusual wit, kindness and unpredictable sense of humor will never be forgotten. God has John in his keeping; we have him in our hearts.

A gathering to remember John will be held on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mercado San Augustin, 100 S. Av. del Convento on Congress West of I-10. Contact 520-326-6269 for info. Donations in his memory may be made to the Arizona Artist Blacksmith Assn, 520-603-6723 or St. Joseph's Hospital ICU, 520-873-5000.
