Matthias was born in Nova Scotia as his parents and two older sisters made their way to the United States from Ireland. They settled in Stowe, Summit County, Ohio. In the 1950 census, the 19 year old Matthias is a blacksmith in Stowe. He married Alice Rebecca Chapman in 1854. He continued his life as a blacksmith, eventually moving to being a blacksmith in a Machine shop. When the family moved to Munson, Geauga, Ohio he took up farming.
He and Alice had 8 children, three of whom died when young.
Matthias and Alice were divorced in 1892 and Alice received custody of the their one child who was still a minor.
Matthias moved to St. Mary's, Auglaize, Ohio and died there. At his death his body was returned to Summit county and he was buried with his parents and three of his siblings.
