He was killed in an automobile accident. Charlie and Bernice were the parents of the following children:
1. Belinda Michelle Mitchem b. 6/23/1970, Geneva, AL (no ch.);
2. Anthony Arvil Mitchem b. 3/18/1982, Geneva, AL (m. Kimberly Lynn Montgomery). In addition to his wife and children above-named, he was also survived by two brothers and one sister: Ella Catherine Mitchem Smith (m. R. Dee Smith), Darlington, SC; Jeremiah Lewis Mitchem (m. Juanita Marie Porter), Memphis, TN; and Wendell Arvin Mitchem (m. Deborah Kay Lennington), DeFuniak springs, FL. Charlie was also survived by two granddaughters: Brianna Mae Mitchem and Jenna Lynn Mitchem, Crestview, FL.
