In September while John and his mother were visiting in Duluth, Minnesota he fell and broke the bones of one leg. He was taken to a hospital, his leg put in a cast and at the end of five weeks was brought home. On Thursday December 24, he was taken to the hospital in Marshalltown to have the cast removed. It was found that the wound had never healed and an operation would be necessary to condition the leg for healing. John attended the Colo school. His classmates were honorary pallbearers and flower bearers.
