NAZARETH - Edward J. "Ed" Ramaekers, 83, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, in Amarillo.

Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. today in Holy Family Catholic Church of Nazareth. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. Nicholas Gerber, the Rev. Ken Keller and Monsignor Harold Waldow as celebrants. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Nazareth by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.

Edward was born Aug. 5, 1927, in Nazareth to Henry Ramaekers and Dora Hoelting. He was raised in Nazareth and attended school there.

He married Leola Kleman on Sept. 1, 1953. Edward served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army Field Artillery during the Korean War.

He was very active in his community, serving on several committees and boards; Church Building Committee; Parish and Finance Counsel; school board trustee; Knights of Columbus; Lions Club; Sugar Beet Board; Board of Directors for Hart Co-op Gin; Senior Citizens of Nazareth; ACTS member; and Tuesday Morning Men's Group. He also was instrumental in building the current Community Hall in Nazareth; he was lead guitar for the "Melody Six" and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and choir member.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Vincent Ramaekers; a daughter, Baby Ramaekers; and his stepfather, Florence Albracht.

Survivors include his wife, Leola Ramaekers of Nazareth; four sons Glenn Ramaekers of Hart, Rex Ramaekers and wife Vera of Nazareth, and Larry Ramaekers and wife Tammy and Brian Ramaekers and wife Peggy, all of Canyon; six daughters, Mary Beth Gerber and husband Joel and Vera Huseman and husband Derwin, all of Nazareth, Naomi Valdez and husband Joe of Del Rio, Doretta Gerber and husband Kenny of Pampa. Renee Weinheimer and husband Nick of Groom, and Marla Gales and husband Shawn of Canyon; a sister, Betty Wilhelm of Nazareth; and six half brothers and half sisters, Ralph Albracht of Nazareth, Elmer and Art Albracht, both of Houston, Elaine Sullivan of Farmers Branch, Jean Kennevan of Cincinnati and Dottie Doherty of Chicago; 37 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105; Holy Family Building Fund, 207 N. Second St., Nazareth, TX 79063; or to Nazareth Senior Citizens, Nazareth, TX 79063.
