Willard ws born in Springfield, Ohio, Nov. 7, 1909. His family moved to Chattanooga when he was a small child. He graduated from Chattanooga High School and attended the University of Chattanooga. His work with Camp Ocoee, YMCA and the Junior Leaders Club lead him to the 1932 Olympics where he was a runner-up to represent the USA in the gymnastics competition.
He was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church for 70 years. Willard was an original employee of TVA as a civil engineer.
He was preceded in death by Bessie Marie Dye, his beloved wife of 63 years; his parents, Roy and Olive Dye; and sister, Rachel Byrd.
He is survived by his children, Roy (Pat) Dye, Joy Black; and grandchildren Cheryl (Steve) Tomplins, Robin Dye, Taja Dye, Chantel Dye, Josh (Lori) Black, Jason (Nadia) Black, Tara Black; and his sister, Jeannette Sitton.
Willard lived a full life of caring, loving and helping others.
A memorial service, body donated to medical science, to honor his life will be held Friday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at First-Centenary United Methodist Church, visitation will be at 9:30 a.m In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to First-Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 208, Chattanooga, TN 37401, or to a charity of your choice.
