Betty J. Ayers, "the Sheetz Coffee Lady," 83, a resident at The Village at Morrisons Cove, formerly of East Sharpsburg, Roaring Spring RD, died Sunday afternoon at the Village.

She was born in McKee, daughter of the late Grant and Myrtle (Miller) Helsel. She married Donald W. Ayers on June 9, 1947, in Winchester, Va., and he died April 18, 2007.

Surviving are five children: Stanley N. and wife, Karol, of Port Matilda, Ernie L. and wife, Georgette, of Duncansville, Sandra D. Vellner and husband, Glenn, of Jacksonville, Fla., Diane K. Rowles and husband, Dick, of Altoona and Timothy W. and wife, Lee Anne, of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three siblings: Sheldon Helsel of East Freedom, Dennis Helsel and wife, Mary Margaret, of Duncansville and Jean Detrick of Duncansville.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and two infant brothers.

Betty was a 1945 graduate of Morrison Cove High School. She retired from Sheetz in 2008 after 26 years of service and previously had worked at the Martinsburg Shoe Factory from 1954-79. She was a member of Leamersville Grace Brethren Church, and she enjoyed cross-stitching.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring (www.thompsonfh.com), where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011, by Pastor Mark Lingenfelter. Interment will follow in East Sharpsburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty's memory may be given to Sheetz Family Christmas.
