Halcyon L. Davies, 86, died on November 30, 2009 in St. Regis Falls. Burial was Forest Cemetery in St. Regis Falls, with military honors. She was born on May 18, 1923 in St. Regis Falls to Earl and Marion (Douglass) LaPoint. She is the sister of Guy Donald LaPoint of St. Regis Falls, and of the late Douglas LaPoint. After graduation from St. Regis Falls High School, in the 1940s, she attended nurses training in Syracuse, NY. In 1945, she joined the U.S. Army near the end of WWII, and was stationed in Saipan, then Korea, stopping in Japan enroute after Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing. After Halcyon's military career, she married Raymond Pondysh, later divorced. Moving back to St. Regis Falls with three children, she worked at Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone, as a registered nurse, then moved on to the Franklin County Infirmary. She then became a Caseworker with NYS Dept. of Social Services where she eventually retired. In 1965 she married Elmer Davies, a NYS Trapper. She and Elmer rehabilitated a variety of wildlife at their country home, including foxes, owls, hawks, fishers, raccoons, deer, and others. Her family reflected on one Sunday morning as Halcyon was leaving for church and caught their pet skunk, "Shot Gun's" tail in the door and consequently did not make it to church that Sunday. They had a joyful country life in St. Regis Falls. Halcyon loved the Adirondack outdoors, picking berries, camping, fishing and also enjoyed traveling and camping in PEI, Nova Scotia and North Carolina with their travel companions, the Rockhills and Susices. Elmer predeceased her in 1997.
Halcyon is survived by 2 sons, Thomas and his wife Karen Pondysh, of St. Regis Falls, Dale Pondysh of Nicholville, and daughter, Carol Rust of Clearwater, Florida. She has five grandchildren, Tonia, Ryan, Dustin, Allison and Coral, and four great grandchildren, Cassidy, Luke, Jacob, and Everett. Halcyon was a member of the St. Regis Falls United Methodist Church, the local American Legion, St. Regis Falls Historians, St. Regis Falls Adult Center, St. Regis Falls Community Band where she played the clarinet, and also served as a volunteer for Hospice of the North Country.
