Dr. Joseph Blydenburgh M.D., psychiatrist and former clinical director of the Marcy Psychiatric Center and a descendent of early Dutch settlers of New York, died Thursday, October 10, 2002. Dr. Blydenburgh, who also practiced at Central Islip State Hospital on Long Island, was born January 9, 1930, in Bay Shore, Long Island, and was the sixth of ten children of John and Eleanor (Weickart) Blydenburgh. After graduating from Islip High School, he attended Hofstra University for pre-med then went to the University of Amsterdam. He married Clair Reij in 1957 and came back to Long Island. He interned at Polytechnic Hospital in New York and then joined Central Islip State Hospital. He transfered to Marcy State in 1972, retiring in 1984. He entered the U. S. Air Force in 1985, became a lieutenant colonel and was honorably discharged. Survivors include son Tim and wife Jodi, their children Colin, Kathe and Jeremy; daughter Celeste Billings and husband Michael, their children, Cory, Nicholas, Michael and Maya; son Jospeh and wife Dora, their children, Amelia and Laura; daughter Astrid Cook and husband Jim, their children, Courtney and Taylor; daughter Michelle Schrader and husband Michael, their children Hannah and Morgan.
