Henry Carter was born in Stewart County on March 10, 1828.
His father was from Tennessee; his mother was born in Virginia. Henry married a young lady by the name of Kittie Brandon around 1851. Kittie was born in Tennessee, but her parents were from Georgia. Henry and Kittie had two daughters, Martha born in 1852 and Millie born around 1854.
Both Henry and Kittie were born as slaves. Henry was a big and strong black man who was trained by his owner to be a blacksmith. When the Carter family was Civil War freed, Henry continued his blacksmith trade. After a few years the couple earned enough money to buy a lot in Dover. This lot was located where the Catholic Church now stands.
Henry died August 30, 1890. Kittie stayed in Dover until her death sometime after 1910. She and her husband are buried in the cemetery for blacks in Dover located behind the First Christian Church on Church Street.
Due to tree growth and underbrush, over the years the graves of the Henry Carter Family and other black graves were covered and could not be seen. Thanks to a couple of men Mr. Dan Griggs and Mr. J. R. Moore, they cleaned off this black cemetery and rebuilt the tomb of Henry Carter. This Photo shows the hard work that was put into this project.
