Sally was a daughter of Colonel Archelaus Hughes.
His tombstone reads:
Colonel Archelaus Hughes
1747 - 1798
He was a gallant soldier in the
Revolutionary War and lived to
see its beneficial results as a good
citizen.

Sally and Joseph were married on 27 April 1810 and they had 12 children.

Sallys' son, Joseph Martin, wrote to her from Harvard that a particular part of Harvards' famous "Yard" reminded him of "Greenwood".
He became Commonwealth Attorney of Pittsylvania County, VA. He married Susan Pannill, whose cousin, "Jeb" Stuart, attended the wedding in his West Point uniform.
Mary, a daughter of Col. and Mrs. Joseph Martin (Sally Hughes) of "Greenwood" married Thomas McCabe.
