Dr. Truman J. Anderson, 89, of Fort Dodge, died Monday, May 9, 2011 at Tompkins Memorial Health Center.
In accordance to his wishes, Truman's body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Sersland officiating. Private interment will be held in Greenfield Cemetery near Knierim. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday evening, May 16 at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Truman Jennings Anderson, the son of Edward and Ellen (Halsne) Anderson, was born June 15, 1921 in Roland, Iowa. He graduated from high school and after completing the course of study at Four C's Business College in Des Moines, he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority building dams in Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1942, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps during World War II. After his return he attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa Dental School in 1951. He went on to achieve a Doctorate in Oral Surgery in 1953.
On October 9, 1955, Truman was united in marriage to Marietta Richey in Somers, Iowa. The couple made their home and raised their family in Fort Dodge.
Truman was an active member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church having served as past president of the congregation and also as a council member. He was a 50 year member of the Noon Rotary Club, served on the Red Cross board, the YMCA board, and served on the staff at both hospitals. Truman was active in the Iowa Dental Association serving as secretary, two terms as trustee, and president in 1976. He was awarded a Lifetime Membership in the association in recognition of more than 50 years of service to the profession. Truman enjoyed reading, crosswords, horseshoes, refinishing antique furniture and was an avid Hawkeye, Vikings and Twins fan. In his later years he loved to watch sports on TV. Truman took great joy in his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a family man and will be deeply missed, especially by his children and grandchildren who looked up to him.
Survivors include his wife of more than 55 years, Marietta, his children Matt (Robin) Anderson of Mason City, Becky (Dr. Don) Dressen of Pueblo, Colo., Dr. Tom (Sharon) Anderson of Cedar Rapids and Steven Anderson of Chaska, Minn.; ten grandchildren, Teal and Spencer Anderson, Donnie, Beth, Kirk, and Brooke Dressen, Mitchell, Brady, and Ellie Anderson, and Chase Anderson; his sisters Ruth Reed of Des Moines and Shirley (Dale) Miller of Coralville and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Bernice Cox, Jennie Bremer, Milton Anderson, Evelyn McDonald, Berdella Middents, and Dr. Ed Anderson.
