Crash Hikes County Toll To 13 Dead

A two-car head-on collision killed a Fort Wayne man and a New Haven couple on U.S. 24 near Tanglewood Drive shortly before midnight Friday.

Killed instantly were Bruce W. Roth, 23, 2170 Garden Park Dr.; Loy F. Boston, 66, R. R. 1, New Haven, and his wife Josephine, 59.

The triple fatality brings the Allen County total this year to 13, and breaks a 13-year string of non-fatal accidents in New Haven.

Dep. Coroner Dr. J. Paul Miller said all three persons died of skull fractures in ruling accidental death due to operational failure. He added that an inquest would not be conducted.

The Roth car apparently missed a slight curve while westbound on U.S. 24, and continued down the eastbound lane of traffic until the impact, New Haven Patrolmen C. W. Myers and Clyde Martin said.

All three victims were pinned in the demolished vehicles. Both cars, however, remained upright, despite the force of the impact, police said.

This marks the second triple fatality in two weeks in the Fort Wayne area. On May 21, a Fort Wayne man, a Monroeville girl and a Payne, Ohio man were killed in a two-car mishap on U.S. 27, about two miles south of Fort Wayne.
