Richard Pius is related to Abraham Lincoln and Daniel Boone. In 1856 they moved to Missouri and were devout Catholics and members of St. James Catholic Church, which was a mission church in New Hartford. From 1881 to 1882, St. James was under the jurisdiction of Immaculate Conception Parish in Montgomery City. Both Richard Pius and Margaret are buried at St. James Catholic Cemetery. Richard Pius Mudd came from generations of Catholics whose lineage is traced to 1634 when the first Mudds arrived in Maryland. According to The Mudd Family of the United States, Volume 1, Published 1977, the first arrivals came here seeking religious freedom from the persecution of Catholics in England and the religious reformation prior to and during that period. A law in 1655 prohibiting Catholicism and Anglicanism in Maryland caused many to seek asylum elsewhere. They eventually migrated to Kentucky where Catholics were free to practice their faith.
Richard Pius Mudd was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and is the son of Alexius Mudd (b. 2-27-1787; d. 1844) and Anna Elizabeth Delia Wright (b. between 1804-1808; d. July, 1853) who were married on January 23, 1814, in Washington County, Kentucky. Alexius was a surveyor in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1816. From this union was born six children. After the death of Anna, Alexius married Mary Ellen Clements (b. between 1804–1808) on September 16, 1834, in St. Rose Church, Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky. From this union were born seven children.
