James Percival Elmore became a Medical Doctor when he graduated from the Tulane School of Medicine in 1877 and is buried in the Springfield Cemetery (22 Jan. 1853 - 9 May 1919. A brief biography on him follows.

Dr. Elmore died on May 9, 1919, in Edgard, St. John the Baptist Parish. His death certificate lists his father as James P. Elmore and his mother as Josephine Kille. His birthplace was given as Springfield. His obituary appeared in the Times-Picayune on May 10 1919, p. 2, as follows:

Died: ELMORE -- on Friday, May 9, 1910, at Edgard, La., DR. JAMES P. ELMORE, husband of Julia Urban.

Interment, May 10, 1919, at Springfield, La.

The 1850 Census of Livingston Parish includes a J. P. Elmore, 22 years of age, born about 1828 in New York. His occupation was merchant with real estate valued at $2,000. Although I could neither find a Josephine Kille in the 1850 Census nor James P. Elmore in the 1860 Census, I believe he is the father of Dr. Elmore for the following reasons.

In the 1870 US Census of East Baton Rouge Parish, James P. Elmore, 17, born in Louisiana in 1853, is listed as a Louisiana Cadet in the University. No doubt, the cadet, Edward A. Cullom, who is listed next to Elmore, is his neighbor from Springfield. Cullom was 16, born in Louisiana in 1854. All the cadets were male.

By the 1880 St.Charles Parish Census, Elmore is described as 27, born 1853 in Louisiana. His father was born in New York and his mother in Louisiana. His occupation was Doctor of Medicine.

Dr. Elmore married in New Orleans on March 31, 1884, to Julia E. Urban. He was 31 and she 26, born 1858. His parents were James P. Elmore and Josephine Kille. Her parents were Dominque and Caroline Urban.

The 1900 St. John the Baptist Parish Census, taken on June 6, includes J. P. Elmore as head and Julia, his wife. He was 47, born Louisiana, father New York, and mother Louisiana. He was a physician. Julia was 42, born Missouri, father France and mother New York.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Census of 1910 taken at Lucy enumerates Dr. J. P. Elmore, head, 57, who was a physician in General Practice. His wife Julia was 52. Birthplaces were the same as those listed in the 1900 Census.

After Dr. Elmore died in 1919, his wife Julia moved to New Orleans. She is listed there in the 1920 Census as a boarder, age 60 and widowed. She died in New Orleans on April 26, 1921. She is buried in the Springfield Cemetery next to her husband. Her headstone gives her birth as February 1, 1858.
