Rhode Island Governor. He attended the Smithville Seminary, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1851 and practiced law in New York City. Returning to Rhode Island in 1861, he became president of the Harris Manufacturing Company, in 1865 and served in the Rhode Island General Assembly. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican the 32nd Rhode Island Governor, serving until 1875. During his two terms as governor, agricultural and industrial interests grew and legislation was enacted governing railroad and highway construction. After leaving office, he was director of the National Bank of North America, founded the Providence Telephone Company in 1879 and served as president until his death.
