Elizabeth is the daughter of John Neville Hughes, a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, Major in the War of 1812 and a major land owner in Kentucky. Her mother was Ann Meriwether. Elizabeth's maternal grandfather was a Colonel in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War.

After serving in the War of 1812, John N. Davies came to Kentucky from Bedford, Virginia, and married Elizabeth. They lived in Kentucky until his death in Hickman County, Kentucky.
