CARLSBAD - Tillman Bannister, 86, of Smedley Road in Otis, died Saturday, Feb 18, 1995, at Landsun Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday the the West Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bob Brockman, Baptist minister officiating, Burial to follow in Sunset Gardens. Mr. Bannister will lie in state 1 to 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Bannister was born May 20, 1908 in Lawton, Okla., to Lawrence W. and Henrietta Bannister. He was raised and educated in Oklahoma. He married Veta Mae Vick Feb 29, 1932 in Mangum, Okla.
They moved to Eddy County in 1936, living in Carlsbad and Otis. Mr. Bannister founded the Otis Water Users Co-Op. He was a long-time educator in Otis, serving as the administrator and principal for the Otis school system.
He was a member of the Otis Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge, Otis Water Users and Principal's Conference.
Survivors include wife Veta Mae Bannister of Otis; sons Garry Bannister of Carlsbad and Adron Vick Bannister of Socorro; brothers John D. Bannister of Artesia, Bryan Bannister of Roswell, A.L "Arch" Bannister of Carlsbad and C.E. "Charlie" Bannister of Ruidoso; Sisters; Millie Simmons of Carlsbad, and Junelle Bean of Delano, Calif.; 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jody Bannister, Mike Bannister, Todd Bannister, Wade Bannister, Cody Burden and Ross Kirkes. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Kirkes and Dr. Emmitt Smith.
