The headstone for Herman Slay places his rank as Tec 4. However, the records provided by the Texas Military Forces Museum state that Herman Slay had reached the rank of T/5 during his service with Fox Corps, 141st Infantry, 36th Army Division "T-Patchers".

Herman's unit Fox Corps assisted in liberating a Jewish concentration camp in France. The swastika flag was removed and replaced with the American flag. Herman was among the soldiers in Fox Corps that signed the Swastika flag.
