– Mrs. Mary Jane Decker, daughter of Isaac and Sally Benham, was born in Marcellus, N.Y., April 9, 1823, and died at her home on South Main street, Moravia, December 28, 1906, aged 83 years and nine months. She was brought up in the doctrines and usages of the Methodist Episcopal church which she joined when young and has always been a faithful follower of her Master.
Ever of a bright sunny disposition, she easily won and held many friends.
Three of her brothers were ministers. One in early life was a missionary to foreign fields, but later held several appointments in old Oneida conference being stationed here in Moravia two years or more, about 1859.
November 3, 1855, she married Evert C. Decker of this town and later they bought a farm in the northwest part of Moravia, where they resided many years. They then moved to Freetown, where her husband died July 3, 1899. Two years later she and her daughter came back to Moravia where they have since made their home, where in lonely widowhood, she has faced many sorrows and privations un-- --ow it has been said "it is enough come up higher" and she has joined loved ones gone on before. She leaves two children, John I., of Auburn and Hattie of this place.
The funeral was held at her late home, her pastor, Rev. W.S.Ly—officiating. Burial was made in their family lot at Cortland Rural cemetery. – Moravia Republican Register
