Henry/Hans was born in Hackeberga, one of five islands surrounded by a large lake. His mother and 4 children (including Henry) left Malmo, Sweden on April 15, 1963, arriving in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 2, 1863. Henry's older brother, Frank/Frans (having stayed behind with his father, Peter/Pehr), arrived in Utah one year later, but his father died from pneumonia in Sweden the Spring of 1864. Henry soon relocated to Santaquin, Utah and worked as an Indian scout for awhile; he eventually became an apprentice in the milling business and ultimately became quite proficient in the trade, managing mills for most of his adult life in Springville and Heber City, Utah. Later in life he worked as custodian at the West High School.

He married Fidelia Lovantia Flint on February 22, 1876, in the Old Endowment House in Salt Lake City. From that union there were 9 children: William, Charles, Mary, Pearl, Ruby, George, Vada, Lois and Frances.

Because of age and poor health, he retired and lived with his daughter, Pearl, until his death.
