Charles Dickens was born on March 17, 1889 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, the son of William "Forrest" Dickens (1862–1920) and Sarah Margaret "Sally" (Hoover) Dickens (1870–1934).

He was married to Jessie Evans (ca 1891- ).

A night shipping clerk for a baking company and living on North Maple Street in Murfreesboro, Clarence was 55 years old and married when he had a heart attack while at work in his office. Taken to Nashville's Protestant Hospital, he died 15 minutes after arriving there.

Survivors included his wife; daughter Mrs Fletcher Jones of Nashville TN; son Chief Petty Officer William Leland Dickens, serving in the US Navy in the South Pacific; grandchildren William F Jones, Judy Dickens and Susan Dickens; brothers Jim Dickens and Walter Dickens of Murfreesboro and John Dickens of Bradyville TN and sister Mrs Almar Youree of Murfreesboro.

Funeral Services were held at the chapel of Woodfin & Moore Funeral Home, and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro.
