Civil War Veteran for the Union. Member of G.A.R. Enlisted at age 17 into Company F, Iowa 21st Infantry Regiment, was wounded. Mustered out on 15 Jul 1865 at age 19 in Baton Rouge, LA.

James' mother was Elizabeth Hipple Peters. Her place of burial is unknown. She was born Jan. 24, 1821 in Pennsylvania and she died on Nov. 5, 1848 in Whitewater, Dubuque, Iowa when James was about 3 years old.
