His first wife was Sarah Ellen Bates. She was born in Perry, Hickman County, Tennessee. She married Isaac Martin Campbell in Tennessee about 1873. They moved from Tennessee to Texas by way of Kentucky where their second son, James was born.

Their children were:
William F Campbell born in 1874 in Tennessee
James H Campbell born in Kentucky in 1876
Robert M Campbell born in 1878 in Texas
Seth Campbell born in late 1879 in Texas

Sarah suffered from tuberculosis, so Isaac engaged a midwife/herbalist from Leon County to care for Sarah and their four small boys. He was very involved with the Methodist church in Limestone and Leon County Texas and through that association, he located the midwife, Martha "Mattie" Barnes. She was caring for a local minister's children in Leon County, Texas. Isaac and another gentleman drove a wagon to Leon County to pick her up. It was a two day journey and on the way back to Limestone County, Mattie slept in the wagon and the two men slept under the wagon.

After Sarah's death in 1880, Isaac "suggested" that Mattie Barnes name may be "sullied" since she traveled alone with two men. Instead of her leaving, Isaac married Mattie Barnes. They had five children linked on this memorial site.
