Jim was a son of James S. Meriwether Sr. (~1889–1943) and Lola Crawford (1894–1994). He married Mary S. Elam about 1940; they were the parents of three children, James III, Lola, and William C. Meriwether. He was married to Mary Melou Brown at the time of his death.

Shreveport — Graveside services for Mr. James S. Meriwether, Jr., 68, of Shreveport, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday September 5 at Forest Park Cemetery. Dr. N.O. Pugh, minister of senior adults at First Baptist Church of Shreveport, will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Osborn Funeral Home.

Mr. Meriwether died at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday September 3, 1986, at his farm in Hall Summit, La. after a lengthy illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Shreveport. Mr. Meriwether was the former owner of Meriwether Supply and was later involved in the oil business.

He is survived by his wife Melou Brown Meriwether of Shreveport; one daughter, Lola Anne Meriwether of Shreveport; two sons, W.C. Meriwether of Shreveport and J.S. Meriwether III of Clearwater, Fla.; his mother, Lola Crawford Meriwether of Shreveport; and one granddaughter, Ruth Ann Chelette of Haughton, La.
