Elizabeth was the wife of Nicholas Meriwether at the time of his death, as she was subsequently appointed the executrix of his estate; some indirect evidence indicates that she was his second wife, but this is unproven. After the death of Nicholas in 1678, she married Col. William Browne of Four Mile Tree about 1680. While no marker exists, she was most likely living at the Browne plantation of Four Mile Tree at the time of her death before 1695.
She is the sister of Jane (?) Hartwell, who married Henry Hartwell, as is proven by Henry Hartwell's 1699 Will. Elizabeth & Jane's maiden name remains unknown, alas.
In Surry County Court on 4 March 1678/9, Elizabeth Meriwether was listed as the executrix of Mr. Nicholas Meriwether, deceased. On 25 July 1679, Mrs. Eliz: Meriwether is granted a Commission of Administration for the estate and orphan of Lewis Williams. On 13 Jun 1680 in James City, Coll. Browne represented Ni. Meriwether and on 6 July 1680 there is a judgment to Lt. Col. William Browne as marrying the executrix of Mr. Ni. Meriwether which would be Elizabeth Meriwether. She is apparently dead by 21 Apr 1695, when her son Nicholas II and his (half?) sister Elizabeth (Meriwether) Clements are appointed administrators of the estate of their brother, William. She is certainly dead by Jan 1695/6, when her son Thomas is assigned a guardian.
